Breakthrough
International Desk: Breakthrough Diabetes can be kept under control, not completely cured, this was the idea for so long. If the blood sugar increased, the doctors would give medicine or insulin after understanding the patient’s condition.
But for the first time in the world, Chinese scientists have completely cured a diabetic patient with a novel cell therapy. This phenomenon is considered as a breakthrough in medical science. News from South China Morning Post.
Doctors claim that the patient did not have to take any insulin or medicine for two years after diabetes was eradicated. Not only that, but his blood sugar levels didn’t fluctuate at all.
A group of scientists from the Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science under Shanghai Changzheng Hospital and Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered this new method. Its details were published in the journal Cell Discovery on April 30.
In this regard, Professor Timothy Keefer of the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Canada said, I think this study represents an important advance in the field of cell therapy for diabetes.
Diabetes is a long-term physical illness that lasts a lifetime. This disease kills more than 1 million people in the world every year. Diabetes occurs when the body fails to break down all the glucose in the blood.
If this disease reaches a critical state, people can even suffer from heart attack and stroke.
Apart from this, diabetes can lead to blindness and kidney failure. A new study says it is possible to get rid of type 2 diabetes forever without drugs and insulin. However, more research is needed on this.
A 59-year-old man had type 2 diabetes for 25 years. He was at serious risk of complications from the disease.
He underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. But he lost most of the function of his pancreatic islets, which regulate blood glucose levels. He was completely dependent on multiple insulin injections daily.
Yin Hao, a leading researcher at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, told Shanghai-based news outlet The Paper earlier this month that the man was at risk of serious diabetes complications.
He further said that this patient received ‘Innovative Cell Transplant’ service in July 2021. 11 weeks after the transplant, the person is free from the need for exogenous insulin injections.
During this time the dose of oral medication to control blood sugar levels was also gradually reduced. And after a year the oral medication was also stopped completely.
Follow-up tests showed that the patient had full recovery of pancreatic islet function. The patient has been completely off insulin for 33 months.

According to Professor Timothy Kiefer, if this cell therapy method proves effective in larger studies, it could free patients from chronic drug burdens. This will improve people’s health and quality of life and reduce medical expenses.
