The lower house of the Philippine parliament last week passed a bill to legalize divorce in the country. The bill will be tabled in the upper house of the Senate next August. Then to become law after the President’s assent signature.

Edsel Lagman, the author of this new bill and a representative of the Parliament, said, “Philippines is the only country in the world, apart from the Vatican, where divorce is still illegal.

This is the tradition of this country. But new laws are being drafted to emancipate Filipino women whose lives have become miserable, who are victims of domestic violence, whose marriages have practically died.’

Lagman believes that this law will reflect a new perspective on marriage and social relations in the Philippines.

Opposition to the law
Attempts to create a divorce law are not new in the Philippines. In 2018, such a bill was passed in the lower house but could not be passed in the upper house.
